(Except a hohum book three.) I have to admit, I liked but didn't love the first book, so I didn't even request this one. Something about the story and characters and writing just didn't click for me in a big way from the very beginning, though I know many others have loved it. Oh, well. I hope that if you continue with the series, it ends on a better note for you.

Wendy @ The Midnight GardenWendy Darlinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13471461156849725177noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523300192245025551.post-13828998823755736512013-06-04T15:09:56.612-04:002013-06-04T15:09:56.612-04:00I can't fully read this again until I sort thr...I can't fully read this again until I sort through my thoughts (I read it when you put it on GR). Unfortunately, I agree in your assessment that this isn't as good as the first. Naji and Ananna drove me INSANE. They could not get over themselves, and I'm still not sure what the problem was? Insecurity + angst is a bad combination. I couldn't focus on anything else b/c of their continual idiocy. Naji was my biggest problem, however. I can't tell what was going on in his head? DId he have a change of heart, or finally get forced into admitting his feelings? IDK, but it's still a mystery to me. This book perplexed me. Also the third curse braking scene was a little too out there for me, even in a fantasy book. And the timing of it confused me? Did it all occur during the battle scene, b/c that was only a few months before their visit? (sorry, I'm being vague here). Anyway, another one bites the dust, and I'm having trouble expressing my thoughts on the story at all. Really it sounds like something magical and amazing. I'm so sad to see that this one disappointed you. I've seen mixed reviews and I guess that I have to read it. Ananna's changes in characterization sound quite frustrating, and I agree the trope that has magic play a large force in bringing together two people can definitely be a frustrating one. I am at a loss. I kind of don't want to read this, but at the same time the first book just ended and I like resolution. I guess I'll just have to see if I get in the mood to read this eventually or not. Lovely review, Keertana!Amandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03052456915027241479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523300192245025551.post-10332041451429121342013-06-03T16:24:39.953-04:002013-06-03T16:24:39.953-04:00Yes. I liked this one just a bit better because I tried very hard to focus on the creativity, the action and the worldbuilding and ignore Ananna's behavior as much as possible, but it wasn't always... Who WAS that girl? Surely not the heroine we all fell in love with! And to be honest, in the end, Naji's change of heart just didn't work for me, especially because they were both so obnoxious.
Ah, well. We'll survive, I guess.
Great review.Maja (The Nocturnal Library)https://www.blogger.com/profile/14276646316400863181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523300192245025551.post-59194759583268210282013-06-03T11:05:20.020-04:002013-06-03T11:05:20.020-04:00Ugh, unfortunately, from other friends' reacti...Ugh, unfortunately, from other friends' reactions I really DON'T think this is just you, Keertana. I was so bummed when this one somehow didn't make it to my Kindle, and was planning to buy it upon release, but now I think I'll just wait for the library copy, because it doesn't seem as if I need to own it. I'm so frustrated with Ananna already from your review alone. I hate that she doesn't grown and learn to define herself outside of the relationship she wants. That's so frustrating to me, I can't stand those people in real life, and I certainly can't cheer for them in a book! Ugh. Bummed that this is going to be disappointing, but glad to go in with lower expectations I suppose. At any rate, it's no longer a top priority.Heidihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00416898799044848769noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523300192245025551.post-65913703608941942212013-06-03T09:54:44.683-04:002013-06-03T09:54:44.683-04:00Okay, I skimmed your review because I haven't ...Okay, I skimmed your review because I haven't read book one but it's on my list. The "magically throwing characters together" aspect was SO prevalent in MAGISTERIUM, too. I love magic in fantasy stories, but I don't love it when an author simply relies on magic to explain every single event. I started this yesterday and can already pick out some of the issues you had. I'm not really liking the change in Ananna's character, but I'm hoping that she will grow on me as the book progresses. I don't intend to read this series, and I'm sorry the final book was such a letdown. I hate it when a book fails to live up to its potential. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
