I agree that Sharon did a great job with her portrayal of Vicky. And yes she is SO naive for the better part of this book. But I had so much sympathy for her--I was beyond frustrated at all the obstacles that lay in Vicky's path --her parents, her fiance, her gender, her role in society--all of it.

But I think what I loved most about AMWF was the historical aspects of it--I loved that this book took place in the Edwardian era instead of the much more popular Victorian era.

And I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED all the girl power moments and look at the early women's rights movement. I like that this book has the potential to teach girls about the sacrifices that were made so that our gender has what it has today.

and of course the art. And the swoony romance. And the secondaries. All great parts too. :)

I really look forward to what Sharon has next for us--pretty sure she's sticking to historical fiction so it'll be cool to see where she takes us:)

Great review and thanks for being part of the ARC tour! I enjoy historical fiction so this is one book I'll check out. The romance seems great, I like the focus on family, and Vicky sounds like a MC I can relate to. Like you, I'm always hard-pressed to find novels that draw me in from the beginning itself. It's often a chore to get to the better parts of a book, but that wasn't the case with this one so hopefully it will work out just as well for you too! It isn't so much that it ends abruptly as that it ends at a point where I wish there could have been more growth and build-up towards, but overall, I did really like this book. :)Keertanahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01071392026876644282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523300192245025551.post-34224373095109954492014-01-11T22:44:51.515-05:002014-01-11T22:44:51.515-05:00Amanda, I think you'll enjoy this one, though ...Amanda, I think you'll enjoy this one, though perhaps not love it. Like you said, my criticism is a pivotal one, but it didn't detract from the experience of reading the novel itself - it was one of those points I considered afterwards. I'm curious to see what you make of this!Keertanahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01071392026876644282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523300192245025551.post-58764539891281797612014-01-11T22:10:20.331-05:002014-01-11T22:10:20.331-05:00I found the art aspects of this novel to be really...I found the art aspects of this novel to be really well-done, Melissa, and I really loved learning about the new information as well, so I suspect you'll definitely enjoy that aspect of this novel if you give it a try. :)Keertanahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01071392026876644282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523300192245025551.post-6681889427083916432014-01-11T22:05:32.527-05:002014-01-11T22:05:32.527-05:00Jenny, I think you'll really enjoy this one to...Jenny, I think you'll really enjoy this one too, not to mention Vicky's narration and the artistic themes. I mostly just force myself to read on. It's kind of sad, really.
With historicals, I'm a bit sensitive about them being accurate, and since this one was, that's like, ten points in its favor. Combined with such a perfect characterization of Vicky, it certainly sounds like a read worthy of attention, minor flaws aside.Maja (The Nocturnal Library)https://www.blogger.com/profile/14276646316400863181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523300192245025551.post-78576908521929612752014-01-11T05:12:13.115-05:002014-01-11T05:12:13.115-05:00I cannot believe it's this first time I'm ...I cannot believe it's this first time I'm seeing this book. How could I miss such a great cover. Anyhow thanks for bringing it to my attention. I usually avoid historical fiction but I can read a book here and there. This one seems truly interesting especially it deals with art. It's too bad to hear that all ends that abruptly but still I think it's worth reading. Great review, Keertana :)Tanja - Tanychyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15084789780467257259noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523300192245025551.post-37400894142492561252014-01-10T21:15:21.570-05:002014-01-10T21:15:21.570-05:00Your criticisms of this book are definitely though...Your criticisms of this book are definitely thought-provoking. I'm with you in that I love a heroine with strong convictions and passions. But if those are contradictory to her time period and the life she's led? Then I do want a gradual change of attitude. That can be a subtle thing to pick up on, but I'm glad I read it here in your review. It's definitely something worth noting, and I won't be able to not think about it when I eventually get around to reading this book myself.
Still, as that seems to be your main criticism, that's not that bad. The rest of the novel sounds wonderful and I am pretty sure I'll really enjoy it (especially since I am a fan of art in books myself). I'm a huge fan of strong willed heroines, so I think Vicky and I will get along really well. Plus, you mention a slow building romance. That's always a win for me!
